![]() Welcome to my website. On this site I intend to post tutorials for those who want to learn some tricks to present their automotive designs. This site is under construction but later you will be able to find more tutorials, news and several automotive articles. You can sign up for the newsletter and you will be informed as soon as the final site is online. I would like to thank Car Body Design for publishing my tutorial. In this tutorial I try to show you how to make quick renderings in Photoshop. It is a very easy technique but you can present your ideas quickly in good quality. If you have a really shifty design, you can make it after in 3D or you can make another rendering in PS but that time you pay more attention for details. In this tutorial I try to help beginners who take their first steps in digital rendering. You can download the original PSD file, feel free to edit it. ![]() First, I always make some quick sketches on paper with pencil. In this period I don't care about the details, I just try to define the main shapes and ratios. If you can't draw very well in 3D, draw your design in a special view (front, side, rear, top) and you can prepare it in 3D later too. You can choose a car-brand and design a car which fits into its aspect. Then you can scan your sketch. ![]()
Now I start to edit the picture in PS. I make a new layer and I generate a gradient on it. This will be the background but you can also use a picture. On another layer I draw the main parts of the car with the pen tool. This will be a vector shape so you can easily edit it later. Then I make another layer, which will be under the previous one. I draw the glasses on it. I set the opacity for about 60% in order to see my drawing's contours. ![]() I prepare another layer on which I draw the head and tail lights with the pen tool. I also make a new layer which will be right over the gradient's layer. I define a shape on it, which will be under the wheels. I also draw the interior (this layer is under the glass' one) and pillar B.
![]() I have looked for real BMW rims to use them. I have edited the contrast as well as the brightness, and I have cut the areas between the rims' spokes. Behind the wheels on a new layer I have drawn the breaks. In this picture you can't see them but I have drawn the edges of the car too.
![]() Now, as it is needless to hold my sketch layer, I switch off the layer visibility. Then I start to paint the shades, the lighter and darker parts with the airbrush on a new layer. When you work on a simpler design, you can use a mouse, but in case of a really complex shape it is good to have a pen tablet. I have also drawn the wing mirror and the exhaust pipe.

Finally, I draw the doors' line and the handle. I use the airbrush to work out the lights' details.

I also make another version with the logo and its type. I make a reflection under the car. This is the finished rendering. I hope, you have enjoyed this tutorial and that it was helpful. Next time I am going to publish a tutorial about how to use traditional media. Stay tuned. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to get in touch with me.
